Put together a to-do list, then do your work. If that’s what you want to do, but you’ve not yet managed to find software that works, give Nitro a shot. This Linux software, which also works in the cloud, is fast and easy to use. Even better, it lets you sort your tasks, meaning you’re only looking at what you need to do right now.

It’s easy to get so caught up in to-do lists that you never actually get anything done, which is why extremely simple to-do lists are a good idea. Some people need more control than that, however, which is why software like Wunderlist and Remember The Milk are so popular.

Nitro is more advanced than simple, and primarily intended for Linux users. Using the web app, however, users of any operating system can give Nitro a shot. Is it right for you? Let’s take a look.

Using Nitro

If you’ve ever used a to-do list program, the main interface of Nitro certainly won’t confuse you. You’ll see the usual way to sort your tasks, including the time and date something is due, and optional lists:

The top categories break things down depending on the dates you’ve assigned tasks, while the “lists” are essentially categories you design.

In any of these lists you can add tasks. You can also add notes. Unlike other solutions, the note field shows up while you’re adding a task. This makes adding notes a snap:

By default Nitro only works on a single computer. Syncing is easy, however, thanks to Dropbox and Ubuntu One integration.

The sync was slow for me, occasionally to the point of being unusable. I’m sure the team is working on it, but if this is important for you you might want to look elsewhere for now.

On a less important front – themes! There are a variety built into Nitro, most of which intended to make the program blend with skins in Ubuntu and other Linux distros:

There’s another that makes Nitro look remarkably similar to another online to-do service:

For the sake of all that is sacred – don’t load the Justin Bieber skin. It’s not worth it.

Set Up Nitro

Ready to get started? Head to NitroTasks. You can log in there using your Dropbox or Ubuntu One account, or download the program if you prefer using desktop software. There are packages for Ubuntu and Arch Linux, and source code for industrious users of other Linux distros.

Sorry, I can’t help you compile the code. Ask at MakeUseOf Answers before doing so in the comments below.

Conclusion

Yeah, it’s another to-do list. But this is a rare native program for Linux not yet found on other platforms. Even better – it’s really good. I hope the sync improves in the future, because I think I’ll have a new favorite to-do program when it does.

How do you like Nitro? Leave your thoughts in the comments below, along with any other Linux to-do software you might prefer over this.

In recent months, Google has been following a strategy it calls putting more wood behind fewer arrows. It involves prioritizing the company's projects, and you don't have to be paying very close attention to know that its Google+ social network is at the very tippy-top of the list. In January, the company's crown jewel and cash cow -- the Google search engine -- got a…

Welcome to Simple Web Designs blog! We are so happy you found us and welcome to the site. Have a look around “Simple Web Designs” and see if we are a match for the type of things you are looking for. I am currently working on http://calvindeans.com “Calvin Deans For Congress” he is a man in the US Army right now and when he gets out this July he wants to start a degree in Political Science and then some type of internship and try running for an office in 2012. Be sure to follow his blog and twitter / Facebook etc..

I am also working on a new Social Network!! I am very excited about this as I think it really has potential. I am not allowed to discuss it until after it’s official launch due to legal blah blah but I will when I am able. If your band, group, hobby club or local small busniess with a budget needs a simple web design then send me an email or call and I will work with whatever budget you have available. I can set you up WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, phpBB, OSCommerce, ecommerce, Zencart etc.. pretty much anything you can imagine I can design.

If you have graphic designs needs we can also do those whether you need a logo, decal, print picture for making screen prints etc we can do that stuff too. Why not call us here at “Simple Web Designs” today and lets see what we can come up with. I can work with whatever budget you have $50 we can do that, $100 dollars yupp we can do that too but don’t expect me to design the next Disney theme park for you on a $50 dollar budget “You get what you pay for” like mama always said.

Mobile Internet Search is on the rise!

Lately the buzz word around the internet has been "mobile". Statistics show that more and more, all around the world people are accessing the internet from mobile platforms. With innovations in technology that give our smart phones and i-pads more power than Nasa computers of the past, even folks with no desktop or computer, or internet access at home are accessing the internet regularly via a mobile device.

People generally talk less on the phone and send fewer text messages now because there are so many ways to communicate over an Internet connection. Though this may seem obvious to anyone who owns a smartphone, a new study confirms the trend.

Chetan Sharma, an independent mobile analyst, released a study this week on the state of the global mobile industry. It found that overall text-messaging use is growing, but more slowly, and in some parts of the world, texting is in steep decline.

For example, cellphone users in the Philippines, one of the top texting nations, sent roughly 400 text messages a month each on average in 2011, down from about 660 a month in 2010.

American cellphone users are still sending more texts than before — about 680 messages a month in 2011 compared to about 640 a month in 2010 — but this growth is much slower than in previous years. Mr. Sharma said text messaging here could start to shrink this year. He said he combined the results from carriers’ financial reports around the world with some private data to come up with the estimates in his study.

Backing Mr. Sharma’s findings, a previous report revealed a decline in text messaging in several parts of the world, including Finland, Hong Kong and Australia.

What’s causing the shrinkage? Messaging services that you can use over the data connection of a smartphone, as opposed to the carrier’s standard text messages. Apple’s iMessage, Google Voice and Skype provide this service.

As for phone calls (remember talking?), voice minutes are on the decline as well — but that’s old news. Voice minutes have been decreasing in the United States and Western Europe for the last four years, and in Japan for the last eight years, Mr. Sharma said.

But it’s not like carriers are suffering. Instead, they’ve successfully adapted to our growing hunger for mobile data. Carriers are raking in huge amounts of revenue from mobile data plans alone — the regular fees we pay to reach the Internet. One way they do that is by offering price structures that compel you to pay for far more data than you would actually use.

Worldwide revenue from mobile data in 2011 amounted to $300 billion, according to Mr. Sharma’s findings. Revenue for mobile operators overall will total $1.5 trillion this year, with mobile data accounting for 28 percent of that, the study estimates. Profits for carriers have more than doubled over the last 10 years, the study found.

“The global mobile industry is the most vibrant and fastest growing industry,” Mr. Sharma said.

Looking at mobile devices, the NPD Group, a research firm, released numbers on Wednesday showing that Apple is the No. 1 smartphone maker in the United States with 29 percent of the market, while Samsung has become a fierce rival. Samsung in the last quarter accounted for 24 percent of smartphones sold in the United States, according to NPD.

Ross Rubin, executive director of Connected Intelligence for NPD, said Samsung is performing so well because so many carriers sell and promote its phones. “Samsung is the only market leader from the featurephone era to transition to market leadership in the smartphone era in the U.S.,” he said in a statement. By contrast, Nokia is one cellphone maker that hasn’t successfully made that transition.

Social media has a reputation for enabling a great freedom of speech across the world. Events like the Arab Spring lend credence to this belief, as people use social media to rise up against the authorities that have thus far shackled them.

If we look a little closer to home however I have to wonder if we’re seeing a restriction in what we can say. Barely a week goes by without someone making the news for saying something on Facebook or Twitter, only to subsequently be reprimanded by their employer for their words.

The latest such case was Police Constable David Crawford from Merseyside Police. This weekend saw thousands flock to Aintree race track for the Grand National, arguably the highlight of the British horse racing calendar. A particular highlight of the event is Ladies’ Day, where women are encouraged to glam up, with prizes on offer for the best dressed lady on the day.

The fashion is not to everyone’s tastes however, not least PC Crawford, who complained on his Facebook account that Ladies Day was more like Halloween.

He wrote: “Enjoy ‘ladies’ day – ladies” before accusing them of being “back to drinkLambrini at 10 in the morning watching Jeremy Kyle whilst shouting the kids ‘Britney and Tyson come down for ya pork scratching breakfast’.”

He went on to comment on the use of “ten quid fake bake tan….smeared all over the place” and ended with: “Tramps! Ladies Day – more like Halloween! Rant over.”
Whilst a glance over photos from the event cannot help but lend some credence to his words, they were not met favorably by his employer. They have referred his complaint to the police standards department, with the officers Facebook account mysteriously vanishing over night.
With the very real possibility of your online commentary lending you in hot water at work, is it now the case that social media is clamping down on free speech?
